Teaching and Mentoring

I offer a variety of Creative Writing courses and mentorship opportunities, both online and in-person, as well as privately and through organisations such as the National Centre for Writing and Bristol Folk House.

As a teacher and mentor, I equip my students with the tools, confidence, and encouragement to feel excited and empowered to begin – and carry on – writing. I draw on my experience as a writer as well as my formal literary training. Since my MA at the University of East Anglia, I have taught Creative Writing to adults and young people in academic and community settings, including at Queen’s University Belfast, where I earned my PhD on food, gender, and literature.

I write, teach, and mentor across a wide range of literary forms and styles, and I especially love working with novels, short stories, and memoirs. My own work has been nominated for the Commonwealth Short Story Prize, the Journey Prize, the Grindstone International Novel Prize, and others. I have also been a reader for the Bristol Short Story Prize since 2025.

Mentorship Opportunities

As a mentor, I work closely with emerging writers to help them learn and experiment with writing techniques, find their voice, gain confidence, and push their work to a high and publishable standard. These sessions are one-to-one, and tailored to each individual writer. For each session, I will read a sample of the writer’s work, provide constructive written feedback, and meet for 1 hour to discuss the writing and answer any questions.

There are three options for mentorship:

  • A 1-hour meeting, with written feedback on up to 2,000 words: £95

  • A 1-hour meeting, with written feedback on up to 8,000 words: £195

  • A one-year commitment, with written feedback on up to 70,000 words (a total of nine 1-hour meetings + seven submissions of up to 10,000 words each): £2,000

If you are interested in a mentorship opportunity or have any questions, please get in touch below or send me an email at cmarkswriting@gmail.com.
